These shocks (along with front ones) were purchased prior to disabling the Air Ride System on our ’98 Explorer. The rears were replaced first. You don’t need to be a garage mechanic to replace car shocks. Count on a shop monkey keeping your car for a day and estimating 4 hours at $100.00 to do the work. This is what you save by doing the work yourself.
The hardest part of the swap was in removing the old air shock. The Air Ride switch was put to the off position (never to be turned on again). The spare tire has to be lowered and then pulled out from under the back end. The air hose and compressor wires were simply cut from the shocks. The lower mount nut comes off with no problems. The upper bolts are another story. It’ll be easier if the metal plate beside the air compressor and the compressor itself are unbolted and moved to the side. I attached the tops first. The shock absorber is fully extended so it has to be compressed slightly so that the lower mount bolt can be slide in. I’ve read where the shock was leaned on prior to installation to compress the spring and piston, then thick Ty-Wraps used to hold the compressed shock until its installed. This doesn’t work very well. It’s impossible to accurately gauge the compressed length of the shock. If you install it on the short end, once you cut the Ty-Wraps, the shock absorber will obviously spring to full length before the lower bolt can be pushed in. Just install the top bolts then put a jack under the shock and lift it into place; run the lower bolt through and its done. Reattach the parts and spare tire that had to be removed to gain access to the attachment points.

Awesome upgrade. I didn’t realize how much I needed them until I installed these! Great look, awesome handling, easy to install.
Did my rear sway bar links as well and it made all the difference in the world! Would recommend these, for a great upgrade, performance and look wise, for not a lot of money.

Installed two months ago and I love them. I combined these with extra leafs to help lift my sagging explorer and tow a travel trailer.

I installed these on the rear of my 98 Ford Explorer Sport and they made a significant improvement in the ride an handling of the truck. After 182K on the original shocks, it was definitely time. I also had the saggy leaf springs in the rear and truck was handling poorly. I installed these along with the Monroe 37122 Sensa-Trac Light Truck Shock Absorbers in the front and it’s a great combination. The ride height was immediately restored, front and rear, and the truck handles like new. It’s actually fun to drive now. The ride is firm and truck like but very controlled. Keep in mind that it’s still a truck and will always ride like a truck. No shock will turn an old Explorer into a Lexus, and maybe that’s the nature of the some of the complaints that I have read about these shocks. This has been the best upgrade I have ever done to the truck, especially considering the price, even better with the rebates. For $130 and a few hours work, it’s well worth it. Some install tips – make sure you soak the rear top shock bolts well a few times and also overnight with PB blaster. I expected to have to cut them as they were very rusty but my surprise, they all twisted right off with a good pair of real Vice Grips. For install, the truck should be up and secure on jack stands, and then just use your jack to compress the springs to get the bottom bolts in. When you do the fronts, just chop the top bolts off will a Sawzall and save yourself the time and aggravation.

Excellent product! My Explorer had a sag on the rear and with this shocks it raised 1 1/8″. Yes, I did the measure for the “Before” and “After” and I was amazed when I saw my truck leveled again! Stetically it looks perfect. Tecnically, it handles much better, little bit stiffer, so it does not bounce, and I like how the truck feels now. I also pull a Pop-up camper that weights 3250 punds, with the 10% of that weight transferred to my rear hitch (325 pounds) the truck is still leveled and rides super good. Not that easy to install for an average DIY. You’ll need to remove the rear sway bar link kit from the chassis. Raise the truck as high as you can (if it’s on the floor) and compress the springs and tie them with tie-straps to hold them compressed.
Overall; Great improvement for your truck. Very happy with the product!

Received these shocks on very good packaging and on time. Installing was straight forward, and the fit was exact. A bit demanding as far as getting the bottom of shock up and into position with tension on the spring. The use of an extra low profile jack and persuasion got it done. They provided just over an inch of lift to the rear of my Explorer Limited with the extra weight it’s got on-board, pretty much exactly what I bought them for. They have been on now for a couple of months and I’m very happy with them. The ride did not suffer. Feels as if it’s more planted in the rear, firmer without being harsh. Would definitely recommend for anyone with a second gen Explorer with a bit of sag in the rear or carrying extra cargo or towing. Good value and functionality.

I installed these shocks on my ’94 Ford Explorer, which was having some serious suspension issues. I am not sure how much height they added, as I also replaced my rear leaf springs at the same time, but I would guess that they added a good 1″ to 1.5″. I am very happy with the ride and quality of these shocks. I was expecting some installation challenges as they are coil overs, but it turned out to be quite easy. The only reason I did not give them five stars is because they are not as shiny and pretty as they are in the photos. Someone really polished them up before taking the stock photos.

Replaced my old warn shocks with these and made a huge difference! Raised my rear end at least 1-2 inches. Went with these I tow a lot. My 97 explore only has 70,000 I’m so nothing was to rusty but install time couldn’t have taken more than 30min for both! Great buy!
