Tensioner is shady in this kit. Check to make sure it actually gains tension when you pull the grenade pin on the unit. Reports of many faulty units. Gates will replace if it’s bad. I spoke to them over email.

Good kit, installed and everything went well, yes some of the pulleys were Chinese but they still seemed to be good quality. belt was good quality and so was tensioner.

Amazingly low price vs dealership + reliable brand

This timing belt kit was as advertised. The components (belt & idlers) appear to be of high quality. The included installation instructions were complete albeit a bit cryptic in places. The price is a marked discount over buying the items individually from Subaru. Installation went smoothly except that the Gates belt is so tight that installing it even with the tensioner slacked off and the idler pulley removed (as per instructions) is a knuckle buster. Of course you want the new belt to be as tight as possible so that as it stretches in use it doesn’t become too loose and jump eventually. But still it shouldn’t be that difficult to get on in my opinion unless there is a trick not covered in the instructions that I don’t know. This is the third timing belt replacement that I have done over the years and I don’t remember getting the belt on (different vehicle) being this difficult.

gates kits used to be great; OEM-supplier pulleys/tensioners + good quality belts. now – not so much.
two years ago, the tck328 i bought came with mostly identical-to-OEM pulleys (the smallest pulley was chinese-made knock-off) and an identical-to-OEM tensioner. when i say identical-to-OEM, i mean the same manufacturer (KOYO, NSK, NTN) and same manufacturer part number as what you get from the dealer.
the tck307 kit i just bought came with two identical-to-OEM pulleys (a KOYO and an NSK), but had gates-branded chinese-made crap for the sprocket idler pulley (subaru part no 13085AA080) and the tensioner was gates-branded canadian-made. look to other reviews (both for this kit, the tck304 and the tck328) for horror stories about the tensioner failing straight out of the box or sounding like a bottle of rocks being shaken by a six year old with adhd. the belt itself also looked to be much worse made than the one on the older kit — the inner weave was showing through the ends of the belt.
to make a long story short: extremely disappointed doesn’t even begin to cover this! there is no way you should trust anything but the original parts for a timing job. subarus have interference engines — meaning that the piston and valves occupy the same space at different times. iif something goes wrong with your timing belt, all you’ll hear is click-click-click-click as your pistons meet your valves, and next thing you know you have no compression and are tearing the engine apart to replace the valves or the heads. it’s a stupid thing to do to yourself by using crap parts for a timing belt job.
the good news is that you can still get all the necessary parts right here on amazon, it’ll just cost you more than the gates kit, but you are guaranteed to receive the identical-to-OEM pieces you need (except the belt, which I am hoping is just an issue with the one I received — gates gets another chance there). if you are looking to replicate this kit with the correct pieces, here is my partslist:
NSK AA010 (subaru part number 13085AA080 — sprocket pulley)
KOYO W01331627580KOY (idler)
NSK W0133-1652558-NSK (idler)
NTN W01331609420NTN (tensioner)
+ the timing belt of your choice (like i said, I am hoping that the gates t307 that comes separate from the kit won’t look like it was made by a hungover monkey suffering from the shakes).

Fit perfectly and was easy to install due to alignment marks for both camshafts and the crankshaft. Some of the pulleys looked better than the originals.

Gates timing belt kits are hand down the best OEM replacement parts when working on the finicky subaru 2.5 motor. Mine was for a 2000 subaru outback limited 2.5L EJ 25, and kit came exactly as described, was 1/2 price as some offbrand replacements, and fitment was perfect. Don’t waste your money on anything other than the best. This is not a job for the individual that does not have pretty extensive auto repair skills, so if unsure (as motor is an interference) just bring it in and have the repair completed by a reputable shop), as the timing marks and alignment need to be spot-on – it should also be noted that timing marks on the belt are approximately 1/2 tooth off from exact, but not a huge deal when you knoe what you are doing….

This is a great timing belt kit for a 2005 Subaru Outback 2.5i single overhead cam. This (TCK307) will not fit double overhead cams. Amazon does have that kit though, just use their auto fit feature and you will find the right product. This is a pretty big do it yourself job but can be accomplished, took my wife and I 8 hours, but saved much $. Of course we took our sweet time, we are no mechanics, but do some auto work of our own. All the parts matched perfectly and are superior to OEM. Thank you Amazon.

Great fit and finish, just like OEM, I think it might be OEM not sure. It lasted for many years until I moved on from that car.

This is the third Gates timing belt kit that I have installed on my Subaru vehicles. The first two were the more comprehensive kits with water pumps (these have a WP in the part number). The tensioner, gear and idlers are from Japanese manufacturers and were either very similar to or indistinguishable from the OEM parts that they replaced. The belt is a Gates product, made in the United States, and has orientation marks that make it easy to get the crankshaft and camshafts properly situated. My only misgiving was with the water pumps in the previous kits, which were manufactured in China and lacked some of the fit and finish of the Subaru units that came on the cars. My gripe about the water pumps notwithstanding, the parts in these kits have proven reliable. The first kit that I installed has been in service for almost two years, and the second for several months, without any difficulties. I appreciate the quality and durability of the parts contained in these kits, and also the nice price offered by Amazon. The tensioner alone sells for well over the price of this kit. Furthermore, the Amazon price for the kit is up to 50 percent less than competing online vendors, and a huge bargain in comparison to the cost of the parts purchased separately.
