Back in 2001, I bought myself a new Jaguar XK8 – a car I’d dreamt of owning for 20 years. It was a gift to myself for enduring more than a decade of 60-hour workweeks (plus many weekends), nonstop travel, cancelled vacations and doctors’ appointments, missing important milestones, drifting from friendships (because I was missing in action), and a few demanding and high-maintenance CEOs (one of whom ended up in prison for securities fraud).
A few years ago, my mother offered her garage as a storage solution for my beloved Jag so I wouldn’t have to keep paying for space. She has a 2.5-car garage and drives a small car, and my Jag isn’t particularly large either. Wanting to give her as much room as possible, we parked it close to the wall, thinking we’d left plenty of space between the cars plus she had space on her driver side too.
About a year later, I noticed she had placed plastic over the car, which seemed thoughtful. But when we picked it up a few months ago and removed the cover, there were dozens of smaller scratches on the hood and long scratches along the driver side – which we could only assume were caused by my mother and sister placing things on the hood and dragging the garbage cans along it. The car is 24 years old and had survived moves from NY to LA and LA to Florida on transport trucks, and years in public and private garages with parking attendants moving the car – without a mark! The scratches were so bad, we knew it would need to be repainted, but to what extent, we weren’t sure – so we got this kit to remove what we could.
My husband used his variable-speed angle grinder and said the setup was straightforward – just attach the backing plate and swap out the pads as needed. The kit includes a good range of sponge and wool pads in different firmness levels. He started with the coarser ones for the worst areas, then moved to softer pads to bring back the shine.
The results were surprisingly good. He was able to polish out most of the shallow scratches in the clear coat, and the car’s finish now looks much cleaner and more even. The pads held up reasonably well, and he was able to clean and reuse some of them.
This kit won’t fix deep scratches – we’ll need to get the damage properly repaired and painted – but if you’re dealing with minor damage in the clear coat, it’s a useful and affordable option if you’re comfortable using power tools, especially an angle grinder.

Alright, let’s talk about this car polishing sponge kit. Because keeping your car looking its best is a noble pursuit, whether you’re a serious detailer or just want to make your ride shine a little brighter. This kit promises a whole arsenal of buffing and polishing power.
First Impression: Wow, 45 pieces! It’s like a sponge party in here. There are pads of all shapes, sizes, and textures. It’s a bit overwhelming at first, but it definitely feels like I have the tools to tackle any polishing job.
Pros:
* Variety: This kit has a sponge for every occasion. From large flat pads for big panels to smaller, more pointed pads for tight areas, it’s got you covered. There are also different levels of abrasiveness, so you can go from heavy correction to a fine polish.
* Angle Grinder Compatibility: The fact that it’s designed for an angle grinder is a big plus. Angle grinders have more power than your typical random orbital polisher, which can make quick work of tougher paint imperfections. (Just be careful, as angle grinders can also easily damage your paint if you’re not experienced).
* Value: 45 pieces for the price? That’s a pretty good deal. If you were to buy all these pads individually, it would cost a fortune.
Cons:
* Quality (Questionable): While there are a lot of pieces, the quality of the sponges themselves is a little…suspect. They feel a bit flimsy, and I’m not sure how long they’ll last with heavy use. I’ve used higher-quality pads that feel more substantial.
* No Clear Instructions: The kit doesn’t come with any clear instructions on which pad to use for which application. It’s kind of a “figure it out as you go” situation. Which isn’t ideal, especially for beginners.
* Angle Grinder Caution: While using an angle grinder for polishing can be effective, it’s also very easy to damage your paint if you’re not careful. This kit is probably best suited for those with some experience in paint correction. Beginners should definitely start with a less powerful tool.
Overall Thoughts: This kit offers a lot of variety and value for the price. However, the quality of the sponges is a bit of a concern, and the lack of clear instructions is a drawback.
Suggestions for Improvement:
* Improve the quality of the sponges. Make them more durable and long-lasting.
* Include a chart or guide explaining which pad to use for which purpose.
* Emphasize the importance of caution when using an angle grinder for polishing.
Recommendation: This kit is a decent option for those on a budget who need a wide variety of polishing pads. However, if you’re serious about paint correction and are willing to spend a little more, I would recommend investing in higher-quality pads. And if you’re a beginner, please, please, please start with a less powerful polishing tool than an angle grinder. You don’t want to accidentally burn through your paint.

I had a problem threading the backing pads onto the extender shafts. The pads would thread on and off but with difficulty. I noticed on the internal threads of the extension shaft what looked like corrosion. There wasn’t a lot of it and I easily cleaned it up with a 5/8×11 tap. The backing pads threads easily onto the extender shafts now.
The extender shafts all worked well. I didn’t notice a lot of vibration. It does take a little technique to use. I attached the handle and made sure I had a good, firm grip on the angle grinder. I didn’t use a lot of force pressing down while using and I found that the sponges held up better without a lot of downward force not to mention it was easier to control the angle grinder too. Tilting the angle grinder at a slight angle helped for better control instead of trying to hold the sponge flat. Control wasn’t as bad on smaller narrower surfaces. I imagine the technique may vary among other users. While I do like the extender shafts, I think the polishing accessories would be of better use on a dedicated polisher with adjustable speeds instead of an angle grinder.
All the polishing accessories all held firmly onto the backing pads. None of them failed, came apart or flew off while in use. The hardness of the sponges starts with the black sponge being the softest and getting more firm with the other sponges. Next would be the blue sponge followed in the ascending order of yellow and white and finally the orange sponge being the hardest.
