Both of my vehicles have been exposed to the scorching sun for that last eight years without a buff or wax… just a washing. They are not dull but could use a good clay bar and a nice polish job prior to a good ceramic waxing. That is where I must say this cutting pad from 3D did a great job. When you combine a top-rated dual action orbital rotary buffer with this pad from 3D… IT’S A HOMERUN!
You must be gentle when using this pad, it cuts the clearcoat (and basecoat) easily, so be careful… you don’t want to burn the clear, or worse yet, cut down to the paint or primer… OUCH!
Afterwards, I like to use a finishing pad from Chemical Guys prior to laying down the ceramic coating. I love this pad from 3D… they make really high-quality auto detailing products. Make sure to clean with warm water and mild soap, then let dry prior to storing the pad. When you pull this Yellow X-cut 100% lambswool cutting pad out for your next job… it should perform as new, and last you for many, many more uses. I give it a “must have” for any car detailer or painter.

I don’t do much with car finishes but I do a good deal of polishing and finishing wood so I try various pads depending on the application. Lambswool pads are soft and are typically used with polishing compounds rather than abrasive grit in my world and are designed to provide a gentle and even application of polish, wax, or other finishing products. I tested this deep knap for even application of a vegetable oil and then hard wax on a small charcuterie/cutting board made with various hard/exotic woods. The result was very good and I believe this pad will be very good on epoxy/resin items as well (although I have not tested yet). As in any finishing, stepping down through finer and finer grits is important to ensure the scratches and swirls from the previous grit are removed. When using a pad, unless it’s a washable product, I need multiple pads to achieve the result I want so having multiple of these pads will be important for quality finishing. I used an 8” orbital buffer on this project since it was small however, I am certain that the pad will work well on larger projects such as river tables and bookcases. This is my first 3D product and I am very pleased with its performance and durability.

I’m a car collector, and as such I spend a LOT of time buffing and polishing. 3D has quickly proven itself to be one of my go-to companies. Their products are sold at a premium price, lets be real, but I’ve gotten excellent results and noticed their pads “god the distance” and last with proper use and care, so it’s a “you get what you pay for” kinda deal. This yellow X-Cut pad is more aggressive than their white lambswool pad, so it’s my go to if I’m working on something that started off rougher and needs more cutting to get down to “good” paint. The pad doesn’t shed much and hasn’t started to come apart out even thought I’ve been using it quite a bit. You pay a premium price, but with 3D you’re getting your money’s worth with the results and product longevity.

I have not tried it on my carbody yet but tried DuraGold on my jetta. This one seems to have softer backing and have foam padding. I think it will be less aggressive when compounding and less compounding marks to take care with finishing foam. It ishowever more expensive then under 15 brands that may perform same if not faster. Giving it 4 star for overall quality but will update after I try it on my GLS whenback from bodyshop. I have a few other pads like this and they’re molded around the edges so the wool goes over the edge of the backing plate. These sit flat and make using the edge of the pad for detail work difficult. Being able to use the edge to clean up tight areas is something I enjoy and it makes the jobs easier.

If you have a lot of paint defects you’re going to be correcting, this will make short work of it for sure. With this wool pad and a good 3D rubbing compound, you’ll be flying through the correction process with quick cutting, no linting & it runs cooler, producing less heat than a foam or microfiber pad which can swell the paint you’re working on and mask paint defects that would otherwise be visible. Paired a 3D compound with this pad and it worked flawlessly. It’s durable and I’ve no doubt it will last the average DIY’er quite possibly a lifetime.
