This sensor is the proper speed sensor for the Liberty KJ. If your speedometer and odometer went dead like mine did, and your wires aren’t chafed/cracked/bent/broken/corroded (as is common, given their proximity to the parking brake line), then your sensor is probably dead.
Since no online stores list a plain old “speed sensor” for the Liberty, I took a chance at buying this one. Glad I did. Fixed my problem for under $30 (hint: dealer or repair shop will charge upwards of $100).
Installation:
DISCLAIMER: I am not an auto mechanic, so I will not be held liable for any advice I have given here. If you are not sure about something, DO NOT DO IT YOURSELF. Take it to a professional. And, without further ado…
This part goes into the top of the rear differential (center piece of the rear axle). Easy to access by laying down under the gas tank, right behind the rear bumper. No need to jack up the car, unless you’re uncomfortable not doing so.
Tools you will need:
– a small screw driver (flat head)
– wire brush
– a 10mm socket wrench.
Steps to install:
1. Remove the wiring harness by pulling back the red clip that faces toward the front of the vehicle. It will pull towards the drivers side. Then, use the screw driver to depress the inner part of the clip from the passenger side and pull the harness off. Do not force it. If you pull and it doesn’t go, you aren’t depressing the clip.
2. Brush off any rust flakes around the top of the differential. You don’t want these in your differential fluid.
3. Use the 10mm socket wrench to undo the bolt securing the sensor to the differential housing.
4. Pull the sensor out. This may be a tad difficult if the surrounding area is a little rusted (as was the case for me) but just wiggle it back and forth and pull (push) up. Don’t try to pry it out with a tool, as you might break it off.
5. Attach the wiring harness to the new sensor. Doing this now makes it easier since you wont be putting undue stress on the sensor later. Remember to slide the red clip forward to secure it.
6. Lube the seal of the new sensor. There should be a little diff fluid on the old sensor; wipe some on your finger and make sure the red rubber o-ring is “wet”.
6. Re-secure the sensor with the bolt from step 3. Make sure it’s tight but don’t overtighten it.
7. You’re done!

My non-ABS 2002 Jeep Liberty speedo was bouncing from 50 to 10 mph and the cruise control was did not work right anymore. My parking brake cable had rubbed thru this sensor wire. I repaired the wires and installed this in top center of the rear axle. Everything works as it should again.

We have a 2005 Liberty with diesel engine. It’s a fine car that gets exceptional fuel mileage and does everything we’ve asked of it. The only irritant in the first 140,000 miles has been the electrical side of the ABS system. Because of how the wires are routed to this sensor, that sits on top of the rear differential, the wires tend to break, causing both the brake and ABS warning lights to go on and killing the odometer and almost everything on the overhead console (trip odometer, outside temperature, fuel mileage calculator, etc.). I soldered in a new connector to this sensor, then changed the sensor. The sensor was easy to install and the modest price was good insurance that we won’t have yet another problem with the warning lights and malfunctioning instruments on our next summer trip.
Addition to my previous comment. This is an ABS sensor. If you need the connector that attaches to the sensor, you must buy the connector separately (Where? The search function is your friend). Installing the new connector requires that you cut out the old one, which is attached to the vehicle’s harness by two wires. It makes a difference which wire attaches to which side of the connector, so mark both before you cut out the old connector and solder in the new. On my Jeep, they are not color coded.
