A great holder for my sat nav. I have a very deep dashboard so attaching to the windscreen isn’t possible. This works great and has never moved or fallen over.

This works really well. I bought a Garmin because I don’t very much like the iPhone-based GPS systems. This mount does a PERFECT job of keeping my Garmin on the dash, in the right position so it is easy to see. I am really glad I bought this!!

  3. a long way from home

For my older Garmin I had the older friction mount. It worked well, but it took up a fair amount of dashboard space and as a result I couldn’t see the clock or miles left to refuel gauges. Kind of annoying but not a deal breaker. When I purchased my new Nuvi a few months back I decided to forego the friction mount and just use the window suction mount that comes with the device. That worked well for a couple of months but now that winter has fully set in the suction doesn’t want to stay put so I came to Amazon in search of other options.

This friction mount is great. True, it has a fairly cumbersome footprint, but it is flexible and can be scooched into corners in a way that the last friction mount couldn’t be. As a result, I am able to see all of the displays on my dashboard and the Nuvi sits sturdily in its place. This mount is flatter than the last one which also makes a huge difference to my mind. The other one was a bit more of a modified sandbag. This is just a flattish piece of what appears to be rubber. It is counterweighted by being long and wider in front so your Nuvi wont do a header into your dash. It also can adjust up or down by about an inch or more. Everything on it works great and the nuvi is now in place and easy to read.

BOTTOM LINE: for my need this is the perfect solution for mounting the Nuvi. I am once again saying goodbye to the suction window mount.

This mount works great. It never falls off the dash. It is non-adhesive and has a silicone base. I have had it for quite a while, and it is still holding up. If the bottom gets dirty, you can wash it, and it will be like new.

I love this product a great deal. It is only the second one that I’ve had to buy in 8 years I believe it’s been. I also previously purchased one for my father. I also highly recommend this seller, 5 stars are well deserved Ll around. Thank you.

We purchased our Garmin Friction Mount through Amazon.ca. It arrived in two days – well ahead of schedule. We bought the friction mount because we were concerned about theft issues if we used the suction cup which could leave a tell-tale circle on the windshield and also because we hoped it would provide stability for our Nuvi 1450LMT that we heard the suction cup mount wouldn’t be able to provide.

It’s safe to say that after a tour through Massachusetts we are extremely happy with our mount. We own a 2012 Ford Focus HB and it fits perfectly on our dash. In fact, we are able to mold the mount to match the shape of the dash in a great spot for unobtrusive viewing. The mount held in place regardless of braking or turning. It didn’t even budge on sharp corners! When we arrive at our destination, we simply remove the gps and toss the mount in the glove box.

I am surprised that a previous reviewer stated that this mount is big in volume (and so the first thing I took note of when I opened the box was its size and I was pleased with the mount’s dimensions). In any case, take note of the mount’s specs as posted on Amazon or on the Garmin website to see if it’s suited for your vehicle.

For the best review of this product, I suggest you go to amazon.com’s Garmin Friction Mount page and check out the review by Timothy B. Riley. It’s outstanding and includes a comparison video.

For us, this was money well spent.

I have to admit that the whole friction mount thing doesn’t _sound_ like it would work well (I guess people are just too used to having things slide around on top of their dashboard should anyone be foolish enough to put something there), but it does work and works well. This is much better than any suction cup mount I’ve used. (In my experience they fall off every 4-5 months no matter what, perhaps due to temperature changes in my area of the country.) Not only is this thing stable but having the GPS down close to the dashboard keeps it from blocking any of the view out the window in my car, and probably most cars.

I have an Audi TT (2001) which has a rather curved dashboard in the area where I and probably most people would want to put this. At first I didn’t think that it was going to make enough contact to avoid slipping, but it actually works! You can’t tell from the product photo, but the base is more flexible than it looks and holds its shape after you bend it. So, you can shape it around rounded humps on your dashboard as long as they aren’t too severe. This is even with the near-freezing temperatures we have around here right now.

Also not obvious from the photos, the bottom of the base is perfectly smooth and looks sticky until you actually touch it. Then you find that it’s like some sort of polished-smooth malleable silicone rubber type stuff that somehow won’t slide against anything, even without any sticky/tacky stuff on it. It’s almost like it’s sticky without being sticky. (No adhesive junk to come lose on your dashboard.) It’s just putty soft and smooth surfaced enough that it has tremendous friction, sort of like a super soft racing tire surface on steroids.

I was trying to decide between this mount and the beanbag version, and I seem to have made the right choice for my situation in buying this one. The feeling I got is that this one is better if you’re not going to move the mount between vehicles (that is, treat it as though it was just permanently attached even though it isn’t). The beanbag is probably better if you want to move it between vehicles all the time. This rubbery one blends in with my dashboard better, but I’m guessing that if I moved it around all the time the almost-sticky bottom would pick up dust and I’d end up having to rinse it off periodically. I haven’t seen the bottom surface of the beanbag, but I’m guessing it depends more on weight and typical high friction rubber than slick super-high-friction silicone type stuff.

I looked up the weight of both this mount and the beanbag version, and I think the beanbag was like 2 lbs and this one is 1.6 lbs or something. So the beanbag might be better to offset the weight of heavier GPS units. I don’t know how heavy they get, but my GPS is only 5oz or something at most, so I thought 1.6lbs would be sufficient weight and it seems that I was right.

Since I have a sports car, I can conceivably pull some serious Gs. I can’t say I’ve really maxed out the lateral acceleration of my car with this mount on the dash (it’s winter here, ice, wet roads, etc.) but it seriously doesn’t show any signs of going anywhere. This is with my typical faster-than-most-people speeds when taking 90 degree turns. Just the weight of the thing plus the ridiculously high-friction bottom seems to be more than enough to hold it in place even if the whole bottom isn’t completely in contact with the dash.

I kind of wish it would lay flatter against the weird excessively rounded part of my dashboard where I want to put it, and it would be nice if the base would swivel or something (though that might put it off balance), but there’s no doubt that it works. Much better than a suction cup, or anything bolted/adhered to the dash that likely couldn’t be removed without damage. I wish I had gotten one of these a LONG time ago.

I have had many frustrations with my previous GPS’s window mount constantly falling off and eventually not working at all. When we recently bought our nuvi 2597 LMT, I was determined to not have to deal with window mounts again. Finding a reliable dash board friction mount was a problem with the previous GPS and I thought it would be the same problem the new GPS. But fortunately, I had to look no further than Garmin itself. This recently introduced friction mount has been the perfect solution.

This mount works very well. The base is held in place by friction and is bendable so you can make it closely conform to the shape of your dash board. The adjustable ball and swivel mount allows you to adjust the GPS position in all directions. I like to keep my GPS on the far left side of the dash board to the left of the steering wheel and not in the more common center of dash. I have used the mount in this position around town and on the highway for almost 3,000 miles so far and it has never moved. I don’t think using it in the center of the dash would be any different unless you made a sudden and violent turn. Normal driving should be no problem.

One thing to consider before buying would be the size of the base compared to your dash board space. The base is a bit large (that’s why it’s so stable) and may be a fit problem on some small or sharply sloped dash boards.

Also, make sure your model GPS is compatible with the mount.
