Bought for my 2001 Highlander; OEM struts still worked but dependent on ambient temperature. OEM replacements were about $110 each; got a set of these for half of that. They shipped quickly and were very easy to install by myself. Use a 10mm ratchet, and a hint for installation, after propping up the hatch with something like a broom handle (careful about the hatch glass), remove the mount on the car body first. After that drops down, you’l have full access to both of the bolts on the hatch itself. They work flawlessly.

We recently inherited my mother-in-law’s ’04 Highlander. She always took good care of it, but she knew how OCD I am about caring for my vehicles. First thing off the bat this 16yo SUV needed was new rear hatch lift supports. The old ones kept the door from falling, but didn’t have the juice to raise it anymore. Took a chance on these aftermarket units from Strongarm.
The lift supports arrived quickly and are ready for turnkey installation out of the bag. Installation was super easy and while technically it’s a 2-person job, one person can do it if you don’t mind supporting the door with your head or shoulder for a few moments. All you need is a 10mm socket with an extension to pop the bolts off and on. The supports need to be attached to the door first and then the car side.
Now the door opens with a purpose – I imagine much like it did when new. It takes a little extra effort to shut at first compared to the old worn out struts, but not bad.
Definitely a good purchase for the money in helping refurbish this old SUV.

Just a few tips if you haven’t done this before: The Toyota OEM Liftgate Lift Supports are installed in left and right pairs. The StrongArm replacements are not sided (i.e., both supports can be installed on either side by simply swiveling the brackets. Be sure to take a picture of what’s installed already so you can see which direction the brackets should face–usually, the pointy side points towards the midline of the car. This set does not come with required 10mm bolts so you’ll need to reuse the OEM bolts currently on your vehicle. A socket wrench extender is very handy for this installation. It is wise to have a friend hold up the liftgate while you replace these or use a sturdy support to minimize the chances for injury. It is easier to start by removing the side of the old support that bolts on to the vehicle and then remove the side of the support attached to the liftgate. Then, install the new support by bolting it to the liftgate first, then bolt to the body of the vehicle. (If you do this in the other direction, you probably won’t be able to reach one of the bolts on the liftgate with your socket wrench.) These are high quality supports and they got shipped to me very quickly by FedEx. They have just the right amount of force–easy to open without getting popped in the face, yet hold the liftgate at max height easily. Closes easily as well. They work even better than the OEM supports.

These made a great improvement on the OEM equipment on our car. In the winter the originals failed to keep the lift gate open. Now it springs open. Some comments: The picture does not show the mounting brackets but they are included. You need the brackets if you are replacing original equipment. When removing originals we needed to detach from the body first in order to get a 10mm socket on the lift gate bolts. When installing, we had to attach to the lift gate first and then the body. It’s a tight fit and the lift gate must be up completely (it’s a 2 person job). We had to have one person push up the lift gate while the other positioned the bracket. Once complete, they functioned great.
